May Meeting of the Manitwo Flyers

The meeting was held at the Washington High School in Two Rivers.  We will be doing several events at this location.  We decided to have the meeting there to get used to the site.  Future events include our swap shop in February of 2004.  We will be teaching some kids to fly in June.  We are free to fly at the parking lot on Tuesday and Thursday evening during the summer.  It might be a good idea to do this.  People will see us flying and want to come over and watch.  A good way to get people excited about the hobby. Flight education day is June 24th.  As of May 22 we only have a couple of kids signed up to participate.  Hopefully with some flying out at the High School we will attract some more students.

For this meeting Eric demoed his latest combat creation.  It is the Choker.  It is very maneuverable and agile.  Although the top speed is not there the cornering, climbing and zig zag moves are tremendous.  With it’s wide wing span it is sure to capture many streamer cuts this summer.

Chad Dumbrowski also fired up his helicopter.

There were 20 plus members present.  It was a good turnout.  This is the last meeting before the airport days.  We hope that everyone can get to see the show.

The treasurers’ report was read and approved.  There were many major expenses.  The raffle prizes, the metro, the trainer box and a case of fuel for the training session.  These expenses came up to about $650.  We are still left with a balance of about $2370.

The minutes were read and approved.

Lew is taking good care of the field.  It has been rolled, mowed and tattooed.  The weed killer and fertilizer are doing a good number on the weeds.  Thanks to Lew, Don Meaneu and his many helpers.

The porta potty has been delivered and is located in the same place as last year, near the shed.

The electric fly-in at the Airport hanger went over quite well.  No hang ups.

The brat fry was a great success.  We made a profit of $266.  Not sure what the expenses were but not bad for our first event.  Anyone interested in another one?  How about a fish boil.  Should we have another brat fry in Manitowoc.  Perhaps at Piggly Wiggly or at Copps or Sentry.  The biggest issue was that we should not have the same person taking the money that handles the food.  Only one known person refused to buy something because we were not wearing gloves.  We should try to get some advertising about the Brat Fry.  Perhaps some bigger signs also. President Al sent a letter of thanks to Pick and Save.  Nice touch.  It is always nice to hear positive feedback.  Too often we hear about things that are done but not about the thank you.

Kelly Sweetman, Pat Hemken and Don Meneau did the folk fair.  There were others involved but I did not catch the names.

Do not forget the sheets to fill out to describe the planes that you are going to have at the show..  Please have these in as soon as possible so we can have them ready for the Airport Days.  Currently there are only a handful of sheets handed in to Al Howarth.  I am sure you could email him the information also.

May 28th is the meeting with the county board about the new flying field.  The county approved the idea.  We could be getting a new site.  Now the planning really begins.

Thursday night is setup for the Airport days.  Lloyd is bringing some tables and Kelly too.  Start setting up around 5:30 ish.  Kelly uis fropping a load of tables off on Wednesday.  Call him about times to be able to help unload.

The flying zone at the airport days needs to be further out then it was last year.  No flying closer in then the windsock.  Jet traffic to east of west runway which is quite a long distance away from the crowd. Hopefully this will work out alright.

Raffle tickets are doing good so far.  With only 19 of 50 people turning theirs in we are doing good.  Remember this is for your club.  It is instead of raising the dues.  Please sell your tickets and help us to keep the price of membership down.

All tickets that we mailed out need to be in by June 1st.  The drawing is during the airport days on the 8th.  We are going to have several people call the members on the not returned yet list.

All club expenditures need to be approved by the club BEFORE they are made.  Otherwise reimbursement may not happen.

There will be a for sale section on the website.  Send an electronic format of the item to Vince.  He will get it posted on the SALES section of the web site.

Mishicot river fest my want some flight/static demonstrations this year.  Lloyd is checking into it.

The EAA Young Eagles show went vary well.  John Coenen and his son were there with Jack Schoenberger representing the club.  They attempted to put together some of the Delta Darts.  It was quite a challenge but they managed to get 30 of them assembled.  Check the photo gallery for pictures of this event.

Some discussion was on whether or not we should help the cub scouts learn to fly.  There is a patch or badge they need for aviation and perhaps we can give them some assistance.  Perhaps we could do more delta darts.  Maybe get some sponsorships to help pay for this.  Write letters to manufacturers to have them cover expenses or for donations.  Don’t forget young girls are interested in flying also.

Ryan Knier is getting a real nice power point presentation about model airplane fly together.  This will be used at the Airport Days.
