History

Manitwo Flyers Ltd. Inc.

Now in our 38th year.

Established in late 1977 by a group of people looking to share their hobby of radio control flying models, the Manitwo Flyers was incorporated with the State of Wisconsin and became a charter club with the Academy of Model Aeronautics.

The club has maintained a flying field for the benefit of its members. Membership has been between 30 and 50 strong, fathers, wives, sons and daughters. Instruction for members is available for beginners and advanced flyers. After basic instructions, new flyers are encouraged to get their pilot’s badge by demonstrating their flying proficiency.

Throughout the years, the club has hosted many flying and non flying events. There have been mall shows, fun fly competitions for all skill levels, workshops on how to Monokote your plane and how to care for NICAD batteries. The club maintains an extensive video tape library of instructional and entertaining videos about RC aircraft.

To help the community, the club has donated model aircraft subscriptions to the local schools and libraries, flight demonstrations for the 4H, boy scouts, schools, libraries, the Folk Fair and the Energy Center. Members have put on a show at the Expo Center. They have flown a pizza from the field to the fairgrounds and have attempted to fly a model across Lake Michigan. The club has also helped with charity events. The club has assisted with the Manitowoc CAP program with boys of various ages. Club members volunteered their time to teach the boys some building skills. When the planes were done they were taken out to the field and flight tested. Many of the students continued to come out on a weekly basis and flew their planes under the AMA’s mentoring program. This new program from the AMA is to encourage adult members to take a young person and instruct them how to fly while covered under the AMA insurance.

In 2003 the club has been certified 501c(3). This charitable tax deductible status was established to help us to develop our club flying field and to further enhance our position as an educational unit in Manitowoc County.

There is a monthly meeting on the third Tuesday of every month. This meeting is held at the Two Rivers Fire Department on Monroe St. in Two Rivers at 7:00 P.M.

The club has sent newsletters for many years and now keeps its members informed with email and a website, www.manitwoflyers.com

In 2005 the club started on a bold adventure to design a build the best RC park in the Midwest. After many long hours by a lot of dedicated members with donations and support from the local community, the club is proud to present the new flying field. There are 2 paved runways. One running north south and one running East West. Both runways are about 75 x 750 ft of nice blacktop. The East West runway is flanked on the South side with a 35 x 175 ft roofed pavilion. With electricity and plenty of gravel parking areas with a gravel road up to the field, this is truly a wonderful flying field, one that can be used from when the snow melts to when it flies again. So 2009 will see the grand opening of the Manitwo Flyers RC Park.

In 2009 the club finished the new field. It is wonderful. There is still a little left to do but now the club can concentrate once again on having fun flying models.
